As for the Jesus Film itself, one clarification/warning is necessary. The company itself adds to the beginning and end of the Jesus movie itself. The beginning addition is awesome and the movie itself is awesome. It is the section after the movie that needs two corrections.
The movie encourages people to ask Jesus to be their Lord and Savior, which we Catholics of course believe in and should do every single day. But it also says that once you become a disciple of Jesus that you are "assured of paradise," meaning it would be impossible to lose your salvation and that is inacurrate. Jesus said in Mark 16:16, "He who believes and is baptized will be saved." It isn't enough to just believe that Jesus is Lord, we must do what He wants us to do, which is also get baptized and be a member of His Kingdom, the Catholic Church, and open ourselves to all the treasures that Christ has left us in His Church. Baptism brings us the Holy Spirit, but it is possible to seperate ourselves again and turn away from salvation through mortal sin. We must persevere in that grace. It is clear scriptural teaching that it is possible to lose one's salvation, which is why we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) where mortal sins are forgiven after baptism. The apostles were given that power by Christ in John 20:23.
-- Matthew 7:21 – “Not every one who says to me, `Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
-- Matthew 10:22 & Matthew 24:13 – “But he who endures to the end will be saved.”
-- St. Paul, the preacher of grace, does not have assurance of his own salvation. He says in 1 Corinthians 9:27 – “but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
-- Romans 11:22 - “provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.”
-- 1 John 5:16-17 – “If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal.”
The addition to the end of the movie also says that following Christ "does not mean following a religion but choosing to have faith in Jesus..." But this is also inaccurate. Religion and faith in Christ are not opposed. Jesus started a religion, the Catholic Church, when He said in Matthew 16:18 - "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church." We are called to believe in Christ and be members of the Church that Jesus started, the Church founded on St. Peter and the Apostles, the one true Church that has existed for 2000 years and holds to the fullness of God's Revelation. That is the Catholic Church. 1st Timothy 3:15 says that the Church is the "pillar and bulwark of truth." This pillar of truth isn't some nebulous spiritual bond between Christians, but a visibile organization that has existed since the apostles. The Pope and the Bishops of the Catholic Church have the authority given by Christ to Peter and the Apostles and teach the faith Christ gave to us without error. If we wish to follow Christ, we must not minimize the treasure that He gave us or reduce discipleship to only an isolated, individual relationship. Following Christ means we have a personal relationship with Jesus and are members of the Church He founded...the Catholic Church.
